Whats the longest time Apple has had your iBook - or any Apple product, for that matter?

On April 15th I dropped my G3 900 off at the local Apple Store...7 days went by...10 days went by...I called and they said the items needed to fix it were on backorder, and they really do not have any type of estimate on when the iBook will be ready. Its not like I'm in a HUGE rush to get it back or anything, I just kind of am curious what should be expected? How long have you waited?

If it helps, the logic board and the entire plastic case, including the screen is being replaced.

More than two weeks sounds ridiculous to me... if it's not ready next time you call, ask about getting a G4 (from store stock, with your old hard drive) as a replacement; I doubt they'll give you one, but you never know.

4 months for my iBook G4. After 2 new logic boards and eventually got a brand new iBook replacement because my the iBook still had an issue with the microphone... (Apple Store Regent Street, London) btw, my 800mhz IBook G4 was replaced by the current model at the time (1.2ghz G4)

Jeez, what happened. I know those things have logicboard problems, but come on. This is really a question, not of how much is being replaced, but of what they are keeping.

That is already too long. I usually send mine in because it tends to get fixed quicker. No waiting for parts as they have to at the store.

Gather round, children.

SO! I aquired this iBook (AND the iMac listed in my signature for $450!) from my girlfriend's best friend. They (seriously) were laying around her house, so I made an offer her parents couldn't refuse. But the reason the iBook was laying around was because it had intermittent kernel panics, the computer would just 'freeze', and the numlock on the keyboard would intermittently turn on and off, on and off randomly, but once it was on, it couldnt be turned off. It had had the logic board replaced once before to fix the problems listed above. No dice. SO! I, of course, brought it into Apple and said the problems. The genious listed to replace logic board. Got it back three (3) days later and the sheet said the keyboard has been replaced. Same listed problems came back...again. So I brought it back....again. Same thing, they said replace logic board, it came back seven (7) days later with the HARD DRIVE and DVD-ROM replaced. It worked for a short while, but the listed problems came back.....AGAIN! So on April 15th, I brought it back to Apple. I made a sort-of big fuss about them not being able to address the problem, so the lead genious said that they'll replace everything they haven't already. Hence, the entire case, screen, and logic board.

I called this evening, and they said the head genious who I had interacted with beforehand will call me tomorrow to tell me the situation. I am crossing my fingers and hoping like heck that they'll just give me a new computer.

My school's tech department had my iBook for repair for well over two weeks. Apparently I needed a new motherboard, but Apple was out of stock on that part. So I went in to ask about the status of my machine a couple times, then they put out a part search or whatever, and that seemed to get the ball rolling pretty quickly.

If you were dealing with a 3rd party shop, and the issue was a missing part, then I'd suggest you get them to do a part search. But since you're dealing with Apple directly, I don't know that there's anything you can do.

I'm supposed to get a phone call from them today, but hopefully they know how to leave a message on account of I'll be at work the majority of the day.

I've never had Apple do a reapir, but I thought I was three strikes and that *book is out. It'd be pretty cool to get a G4 for your G3.

Just talked to the head genious on the phone. They're "giving me a new laptop."

I hope the new laptop is better than the one I gave them!

The white iBook G3s have extrememly high repair rates. The G4s do not, so far.

I will be hitting up the Apple store circa 10AM, after my class and I hopefully will be picking up something better than what I dropped off!

I got a white iBook when they first came out, but its trackpad button stuck up at one end a bit and felt "sticky." So I stupidly sent it in, but it took them more than 2 months (if I recall correctly) to get the repair done. Admittedly, they had just come out and parts were probably scarce, but when I called to check on it the CSR's reaction made me think that maybe someone had just forgotten about it, since I got it back within a matter of a few days after that. I'm glad it wasn't my only computer.

0.

My iBook (G3, 500 Mhz) ran for 4 years w/o a problem. When the logic board died, I had it replaced by a third party service, not Apple. So now I'm in year 5

About a week, until they initially shipped it. ;-)
