I'm wondering if an external DVD works with any USB II capable computer. Specifically, will it work on an iBook G4? Thanks.

Help! I have a NEC 6500-A external USB DVD-RW which doesn't even show as being plugged into my iBook. Any ideas?

Not to be rude, but you've put a disc in right?
Does system profiler show it being connected to the USB bus?

Hahahhaa! The disc was in right. No, system profiler does not show it being connected to the USB bus. However, it does power up the DVD. And, it works on Windows!

Do you have the drive setup as master or slave? Sometime externals can be picky...Maybe check the jumpers? Also is it going through a usb hub? if yes, try it without the hub?
