My brother just bought a used G3 iBook a few weeks ago, and it seems that the logic board just died on it. It seems that the recall for this problem officially expired last Spring, but I was wondering if anyone knows if Apple is still willing to fix them?

Or how much it would cost if he had to take it to an Apple Store and have them fix it? Or if he has any other options?

Thanks

Apple will be willing to fix it. But the machine has to be with 3 years of it's last retail date. So unless that unit was sold as a refurb to the person he sold it from, its a paper weight that could be parted out for its display and airport card. Apple will charge $300 flat to remedy or repair the unit.

You can do a google search on " ibook g3 logicboard defect" and you should get a link 2 or 3 down the page with Apple's policy. The serial number is under the battery. it believe it ultra violet 223- to ultra violet 430-

If you go to www.apple.com/support
then enter the serial number of the iBook on the bottom right of the page, it will tell you the support coverage on it and approximately when it was bought. If you it's under 3 years old, then you're in luck.

The logic board replacement program also only covers video problems on the iBook (dead screen, flickering screen, etc.) so if yours is a different kind of logic board failure they may not cover you.

Good luck!

I thought I'd do a Google to see if anyone else was having these problems still, and stumbled across this forum.

I just took my wife's iBook 800MHz into the local Apple Store today for the THIRD logic board replacement. She bought it in May 2003 and had the first board replaced due to random lines etc in 2004 and the second board replacement just two months ago due to disappearing screen. This third board now boots up to no video. It seems to me that the problem was not fixed and they just put in a new version of the same board in the hope it doesnt show up this time.

The "genius" marked the repair form to say this was the third fix, but I doubt they are going to really fix it for real this time or offer some form of decent compensation (like $500 off a new iBook). At the last replacement in March, they also decided to replace the hard disc without telling us (and there was nothing wrong with it), and so all data was lost too. We rejected $50 off of Tiger for compensation for that - you can buy it cheaper in Fry's even after that discount.

I'd be interested to hear of others' stories with this problem.

Cheers,
David.

You signed a repair authorization that clearly stated that by submitting your computer for repair the hard drive might be erased. They don't replace parts that don't need replacing. That costs them parts. The hard drive needed replacing.

They also don't discount computers except for students or businesses. They have been known to just replace computers after three unsuccessful repairs. People have wound up getting the latest machine which is much better than the broken one.

Good luck with your iBook situation.

If you know how to use a screwdriver you can probably fix this problem yourself. Go to a hardware store or Wal-Mart and get some small adhesive rubber feet. Take the bottom cover off the iBook and you will see a raised square in the aluminum cover. Place four of the feet on on this area and replace the cover. Unless your contacts are completly destroyed, this should fix the problem.

What the heck are you talking about ? Not a dead logic board, that's for sure

We got the fixed iBook back this week - 4 days over a weekend, so pretty impressive.

Macpilot: The form from previous explicitly said we'd need the $30 backup should it be necessary (there's a check box for that) but it was disregarded by the repair center. If it had broken, the hard drive broke while in their possesion and so getting a data recovery company to get the data off the drive shouldn't be an issue. Instead they just replaced the drive and offered the discount on Tiger. When asked if the drive would be still available to get the data off, the genius said that the center would have returned it straightaway to the manufacturer for the warranty credit - which doesn't excuse not getting specialist data recovery in first.

Hopefully there won't be anymore problems for a while - the first replacement lasted nearly two years. If not, then hopefully the move to standard Intel parts means issues like this won't be common again.

I just dropped off my G3 iBook for repairs and they determined it was still eligible for the logic board replacement program. It had been replaced once before, but I am pretty sure I am outside the original window.

The Support Bulletin did say that Apple would continue to " evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed."

....so, I would point out to the "genius" you happen to talk to that others are definately receiving the warranty fix for free.
