hi
these forums are a great help.

like everyone i want to know if the new 17" will have a whine and heat.

i called tech support in uk and asked them if the whine was fixed,
they just said we havent heard anything, but if there is a problem it would appear on apple support web page : http://www.apple.com/support/

on the right hand side under a 17" repair extention programme.

i told him i bought a quad and exchanged it three times because of "issues" with fans and burning fumes.....im selling my quad after 3 months... i really didnt like it
any way, i told him i dont want to spend £2000 on a 17" that develops a whine after a month as i work in complete silent room...

i asked him can he get someone to email me to say if i buy a 17" now and it develops the whine and heat problem, that they will replace it and not repair it...

he said they cant do that....

so guess im gonna have to wait, and probably most other people will do the same with their £2000 ...thats a lot of missed sales for apple....

you would think theyd cure the problem, and announce it... i have always had macs, but they have to remember for £2000 you want quality control....

i will definately be calling with others on may 20th....apple have to talk to their customers..and let us know whats going on here !!

** my little rant ** he he

fantastic products apple, but sort out the problems, and be honest !

I believe that most people don't even know about the MacBook Pro whine, so don't think Apple looses much sale from this at all. The great majority of Mac users don't read forums or rumor sites, so they would only know about issues printed in larger medias like WSJ or the like. And as far as I have seen, nothing about the whine there... Correct me if I'm wrong.

The first reports about the new 17" MBP both here and on other forums indicate no whine! Also, they don't seem as hot.

The 17" PowerBooks won't be as hot, because the larger aluminum case acts as a larger heatsink. and there's more space around the motherboards for cooling

I don't think there is anything you can do but wait and see what people say on the forums. When the 15" came out, the first impressions were almost all positive. It was only after awhile that the whine issue came out. My 15" MBP has no whine at all so far--lucky me--but the keyboard came crooked and I had to get that fixed. Quality control at Apple in general seems to have taken a backseat to churning out large numbers of high priced laptops.

And remember, A) Maybe like 1/1000 of people with a MacBook are members of web forums, and B) of those that are, generally only the ones with issues post.

I'm not saying there aren't issues with the MacBooks, but I doubt you can use forum postings as an accurate guide as to the severity of the issues or to how widespread they are.

I hear what you're saying and partially agree. Forums like this can give an uneven impression. However, I do believe if the frequency of a single issue becomes like a mantra on these forums then that is something to pay attention to.

For example, if a single poster complains about a malfunction on the power button and then you don't here anyone else complain about that same issue you can assume that powerbutton malfunctions on the MBP are not a widespread problem. If you have mulitple angry threads from people complaining about a single issue that simply never die--such as a whining noise--then that automatically has more credibility.
