I have had my 15" Powerbook. It is only a year or so old but a few days ago it started to make a weird whirring noise if I tilt it whilst it is running. It is fine whilst it is flat on a surface or stationary at an angle but any movement produces this noise.

The noise seems to be coming from under the right hand side of the keyboard but it is hard to tell and it sounds like something is spinning off center.
I thought it might be the CD drive but putting a disk in makes no difference so I am thinking it must be the fan?

I take my machine pretty much everywhere with me and while it is in a protective sleeve it does spend alot of time in my bag and my car and may have taken a bump at some time.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to what the source of this noise is and whether it is something I can fix myself. Pevious Macs have always been very well behaved and I am hoping this isnt going to be the one that dies on me.

Cheers people

I was going to make a thread about this exact thing, even after I saw the title of yours.. I figured I should probably read it.. and, weird, it's the same thing..

Anyway, my chick has the same problem with her 1.5 15". When you tilt it back and forth it makes that humming noise, also you can feel a slight vibration, like that of a small motor or something.

I'm not sure what the deal is, but she's had other issues with it too. When she starts it up at times, there's a long "booooooop" sound, as well as issues coming out of sleep mode.

We ran fsck or whatever at the apple store, but nothing really did anything. :/

Sounds like the same thing but I have not noticed any other problems since it started and it doesnt seem to be getting any worse.
It has been sugested that it is the fan spinning off center but no one can tell me how easy that is to fix or if I can do it myself
