At our local Apple store, they were unable to get the hard drive from an iBook to mount (unfortunate accident with a glass of wine).
Anyway, looking at the specs from Apple's page, I see "60GB ATA/100 4200 rpm" for the drive.
Will this type of drive work with a standard 3.5 inch disk external ide-to-usb enclosure? I was thinking of looking into recovery software for damaged partitions.
Failing that, can anyone suggest a place to send it?

I believe CompUSA has 2.5"->3.5" IDE adapters for like $9. Useful if you don't want to buy a full 2.5" enclosure.

I actually went to compusa and got one. I put in the old hard drive, plugged it into the usb port of the macbook, and the disk mounted. After using the migration utility, I was good to go.
Now as to why Apple service, who told me that the drive was damaged beyond repair, couldn't get the drive to mount ...

I had this experience recently - sometimes the iBook logic board wont mount a damaged drive, but the external USB will. Its just that it takes a LOT of screws to move an HD around. Also, when you say apple tech, do you mean mailing the computer into apple?

I took it to an Apple store. They removed the drive for me. While they had it, they attempted to mount it in their own external ATA to firewire enclosure.
I purchased a USB enclosure for 2.5 inch hard drives that was very straightforward to get working.
