After a day or two of looking for information regaurding the MBP's I decided to join these forums. I am a Notebookreview.com member but very very few people own Apple's there.

I am considering a 15inch 2GHz MacBook Pro. And that brings me to this question. Now, I have read on numerous accounts that the, well entire Apple line now(notebooks), run extremely hot and experience a "whine". How common is this problem? Is it more common in the earlier models? Is Apple going to fix this problem?

Also my second question goes to portabilty. I have a 17inch Qosmio G25. It's huge, and its 100% out of the question to move around a lot. I guess this is more of a "should I go with the MacBook or the MacBook Pro" question. But I would rather have the MBP for the X1600. I have read it is possible that you can get 4.5 hours of battery life out of the MBP with the Wifi and Bluetooth turned off, is this true? I will need something portable with enough power to play fairly complex apps(I'm not sure the MacBook would suffice). I will be carrying it in a backpack to and from school with a few textbooks in with it(this is why I turned to Apple, best build quality). And since an Apple store is not close by, I am asking for you opinions.

Thanks for all your help!

With that MBP I think you need to just plan on about 3 hours of battery life. You can get more buy turning stuff off, but if you just accept 3 hours as the amount of time you'll get then you'll not be mad when it's not 4.5 hours.

I just got one of the new revisions, 15" 2.0. Don't seem to have the whine, but it is hot.

I used to have a 12" iBook, so this is pretty big in comparison but it's still easy to travel with.

Does it get so hot that it crashes or shuts down?

i just got my 2.16 mbp today. I spent a good hour or two trying to decide between the 13in mb and the mbp 15. portability was also a chief concern.

i went with the mbp because the look and feel of he mbp just doesnt compare to the mb. i didn't like the plastic or the weird keys or the glossy screen. I havent experienced any whine but yes it is hot. I feel that the 15 is portable enough for my needs.
Macbook Pro 15" (fully spec'd out)

...waiting for 6g ipods.

No, no. Nothing like that.

It just gets very warm, and even hot, with the metal case.

As long as it doesn't get so hot that it has to shut down, it's fine with me. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the loudest) how loud is the whine?

Also, would you get the 2GHz or the 2.16GHz?

Keeping in mind that I have never actually heard the whine (or seen a MacBook Pro in person ) I think I can answer by saying that it's a relatively quiet sound, and one that some people might not notice (similar to the hum of florescent lights). Would someone with a whiny MBP like to chime in?
