I figure, if I can unload this 2GB machine, I could get a comparable (and lighter and smaller) MacBook configuration, and get some boosts in speed, however:

--CS apps are not running in Rosetta as fast as PowerPC currently
--higher resolution on the PowerBook, and
--Dual-layer 8GB DVD Drive!!! handy, but slow
--DVI/S-Video
--PC Card for card readers
--FireWire 800
--backlit keyboard

I'm looking at Aperture to fly faster though on the MacBook, and upgrading the internal drive with something less expensive, but way faster and more capacity. The iSight and remote--meh, not terribly interested, but whatever. Now that I look at that list though, I might just wait one more rev for the Merom chip to make an appearance, or maybe one more afterward.

Are there any benchmarks comparing these two yet?

What would you all do?

The MacBook has all those features, if I remember correctly.

Macbook doesn't have any of the last 5 items.
"Mac Daddy" - 15" MBP, 2.2 GHz Core i7, 8GB, 750GB HDD
"Mommy Mac" - 13" Macbook, 2.4GHz C2D, 2GB, 160GB
"Baby Mac" - 15" PB, 1.5GHz, 1.5GB, 80GB
64GB iPod Touch (4th gen)

Keep your PowerBook. A larger screen is a godsend, and Aperture won't like the GMA950 very much.

Wait a revision or two. Who knows? Apple may eventually put a dedicated graphics solution in the MacBook if it can find a way to differentiate it more from the MacBook Pro.

You should be looking at the MBP instead of the MB.

Replacing a "PowerBook" with an "iBook" to run pro apps is silly.

I'm sorry, I got confused - I thought he was comparing the MBP to the Powerbook, not the Powerbook to Macbook. Opps!

Generally I'd disagree with this blanket statement. I think the the MB can run most of the pro apps more then adaquetly. Photoshop, for instance should run fine, but the OP did mention that he wanted to run Aperture and that's a whole different ball of wax.

To the OP,
I own a mini which for intents purposes is the same specifications as a MB and Aperture executes on my mini. Notice I didn't say run. Aperture probably like no other application relies so heavily on the GPU that performance is a major issue. Heck Aperture on my G5 X800xt GPU runs very nicely but there's a world of differece between a X800XT and the GMA950.

Also hard drive speed impacts the performane of Aperture. I was waiting on my mini as it was reading the library and getting ready to display the thumbnails.

Your current PB is better situated to run Aperture so I'd stick with that if I were you.

Yes. I'm simply wondering if a "side-grade" would work for my purposes, and get on the Intel bandwagon sooner, but I definitely have my sights on the next generation MB Pro. Pro. Just thought getting smaller would be nice too.

Huh. Looks like a lot of pros are going to be waiting, at least until Adobe gets their shizz together.
