Hi everyone -- I'm new to the forum. I haven't used a Mac since the early days, when I had a Macintosh Plus before they even put hard drives in them. I used Macs up until System 5 or 6 and then (please forgive me) switched to Windows. But I've been thinking about getting a Mac, and so I bought a MacBook the day they came out. So far I like it, but I do have the same problems many others have -- the heat, the "mooing", the whine (which just started today).

I also just noticed that the power brick gets really hot. Is that normal? I don't think it's been this hot at all before -- when I first bought the MB and charged the battery, it wasn't this hot. Does the heat have anything to do with charging the battery and using the MB at the same time?

Thanks for your help.

Mine has always gotten pretty hot, especially when I'm using it and charging at the same time. I always assumed it was normal.

I don't have a MacBook, but my iBook's brick can get surprisingly hot sometimes. I'm sure that the MB one gets just as hot, if not even hotter.

Thanks for the replies -- good to know that it's a normal thing. I guess I just didn't notice before, and since this was the first time I was charging and using the computer at the same time, the high heat of the power brick sort of worried me.

This is now new - the brick for my Powerbook 12" got so hot sometimes that you could barely touch it.

Ditto with my TiBook -- you expect the adapters to get genuinely hot around the middle of a battery charge. What worries me about the Intel books is that parts of them seem to be getting as hot as the power brick.

Same here, I sometimes worry I will damage the thin power cable if it happens to by touching it.

I liked to put the iBooks one next to my feet in the winter to keep them warm. That little puppy is a bakery!

I have a friend who owns a G4 PowerBook, and he once ran the game Unreal in the background to heat up the computer even more than usual because he was sitting in a very cold library and wanted to keep is hands warm.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies -- I was concerned about the temperature level of the brick (it was cooking!) but if it's normal (or it doesn't cause any problems) I won't worry too much about it.
