I have a wonderful wife, but as many of you may have observed, women can get nutty at times ...

Here's my delema. Thanks to our lovely sensationalist media, my wife is under the perception that my laptop could burst into flames at any minute and burn down our house. Yes, there have been a couple questionable stories out about macbooks running hot, and arguably being a fire hazard. Yes, it does run hot, but come on!

Any thougths on combating this insanity ...

The "madness" is complete BS!!!

YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO USE ANY (ANY ANY ANY) LAPTOP ON CARPET.

Every laptop manufactures instructions implicitly state that a laptop must only be placed on a hard flat surface for cooling. If this family failed to READ the directions then it is THEIR fault not the manufactures.

This is just another example of the ignorance and irresponsibility of the press.

Apple's "laptops" are not called laptops they are Portables or Notebooks...meaning they should be used on a desk. Now do i use my Portable MBP on my lap all the freakin time. if i got burned by my MBP could i sue apple nope...the covered there ass on this. it's not apple's fault that the 11 year old was given an iBook and his parent's didn't make him read the instructions.... AHHH parents!!

These local stations are always looking for these sensationalized little stories. Next week they will be reporting on the dangers of baking cookies. However, even though you should expect a laptop to overheat if its on carpet or a bed--it shouldn't burst into flames. The test will be if this turns out to be a widespread problem--which I doubt.

Get one of those "Lap Desks". They're padded on the bottom, but have a hard plastic surface on the top. They're intended to provide a portable writing surface, but they can be used quite nicely to provide a good surface to use a laptop on your lap or on a couch without blocking vents. Even if your computer is not in danger of bursting into flames, good ventilation will prolong its' life.

Does your wife have a cell phone?

I can send you links for quite a few stories about cell phone batteries exploding and/or catching on fire...

His son's iBook catches fire, and instead of grabbing a fire extinguisher, he carries it outside and then grabs a camera???
