In the last few days my MBP has become noisy. It sounds as if the fan blades are hitting something. It's clearly related to the fan because the sound ramps up and down with the fan speed. It's becoming really annoying and only disappears when the MBP sleeps or is off (when the fan stands still).
Could there really be something obstructing the fan blades? Or could it be bad fan bearings? Any ideas what's going on? Of course I'm not very keen on bringing it in let alone getting the guy on the phone to believe me this behavior is not normal and that it needs warranty repair. But the noise is starting to worry me.

Did you take the mac apart or did this suddenly occur,
Perhaps a ball bearing siezed in the fan, or its now off balance and its striking the houseing (or something broke loose and its in the way of the fan. Regardless, call apple and get it repaired. Doesn't sound like its something that can be easily rectified by you.

I've never opened the case on this MBP, so I'm certain I didn't cause it. It happened all by itself three days ago; didn't drop it, didn't bang it. It sometimes gets very quiet when the fan revs down while the MBP is idling, but as soon as the fan revs up again, the noise becomes louder.

Of course I know. But before I watch my MBP get shipped off for two weeks (yes, that's what it can take if you're not in the US) I want to know what the heck is going on. But don't worry, I will call them up.

Tell them you are having multiple issues / problems and that you want them to expedite your repair.
