I'm getting ready to set up a new iBook and would like to transfer my Safari bookmarks, iCal events, and photos that are in iPhoto on my old PowerBook. I would like to avoid transferring the Safari, iCal, and iPhoto applications since they will overwrite the newer versions which come loaded on the new iBook. Any way to accomplish the transfer of the data with out transferring the applications when I use the setup assistant?

There is an option to not transfer applications to the new iBook. You will see it once you have the two Macs connected.
Is it true that the Migration Assistant will over-ride newer apps with older apps? I have used it several times and I have never noticed that happening, but I may have had all my apps up-to-date. One would think that the Migration Assistant is smarter than that...

No, it's not true. I don't know where that rumor get started.

This is the genesis of my concern:
Page 8 of the user's guide:
"Important: Use caution when you transfer applications so that you don't overwrite later versions of the applications already installed
on your iBook."

Why not to an iSync for your data on the old machine, then do an iSync on the new one. I did this to get all the calendar events, address book info, Safari bookmarks, and even email accounts copied over to my new MacBook. It doesn't get any easeir than that. To transfer your photos I would recommend connecting the two computers and running Firewire Target Disk Mode on the older PowerBook. It will mount to the desktop of the new iBook like an external drive making the transfer of all your pics a drag-and-drop operation.

I can do the Setup assistant to move everything I want except my Entourage data, Safari bookmarks, and my iCal events (I would use Firewire Target Disk Mode to move other folders if necessary). Can I use iSync to transfer data without a .Mac account? If so, what's the procedure?

I used the Setup Assistance and it worked fine. No problems. Thanks for the help.

Did you have any problems with your applications or did you choose not to move them?
If you post a few details about what you did it will help others who read this topic in the future.

I transferred all my applications. None of the old apps (Safari, iCal, etc, overwrote the newer versions. All my old settings, preferences, and bookmarks were properly transferred. My only problem is a minor one: trying to uninstall uControl to get it out of my 10.4.4 System Preferences. The uninstaller does not recognize the uConrol app that was transferred from my old computer and refuses to uninstall the version which was transferred from 10.3.9. Other than this problem, everything went suprisingly well.
