When I take out the power cord, the screen brightness decreases slightly (and vice-versa). Is this normal?

Hi,
It is normal. Look in your Energy Saver settings in your System Preferences. Look at the settings for Battery Power. You can have the screen operate at lower brightness settings when running on battery power. It is designed to increase battery run time.

Is that actually the case? Because with my older PowerBook, there is no such setting. Only settings for how long until the display turns off. I've always thought that they should add a "battery screen brightness" setting, though.

It is the case. You've had this option since the MacOS 8 and 9 days on PowerBooks. I had a Powerbook 1400cs that I could set these options on under the Energy Saver control panel.

Well unless I'm missing it, neither my 12" PowerBook or Pismo have it running Tiger.

Ah, I think perhaps I misunderstood what you meant. There is indeed a "Reduce brightness when using this power source" option. I thought you meant that there was a slider that allowed you to select a brightness level to use when on battery power. Sorry.
