Since the MBP is running on a brand new Intel Core Duo and has a decent graphics card, how long should its life be?

Obsolete is subjective. If what you mean is "before it wont run any of the latest and greatest software" then you have a number of years, possibly longer. However, if what you mean is "how long until it is replaced by a laptop that is significantly better." Then in my opinion you have two revisions before the new MBP will be substantially better then this one. Which is about a year.
