Anyone using File Vault on a MB? I never used it on my iBook or Mac mini since I heard reports that a 4200 RPM drive slows the system down too much with FV turned on. Now that the MBs have a 5400 RPM drive, I'd sure like to use FV protection in case my baby gets stolen. I'm not sure I should enable it right now, since I didn't follow the discussion about FV's safety (heard of data loss etc.). Any experiences?

I think using filevault is a little over kill, sure it protects your data from theives but since it rarely leaves my side and I don't travel all that much. The overhead it produces to encrypt/decrypt the data is not worth the effort. Add on top of that the risk to the data, since your dealing with a single large encrypted container, if the system "burps" you could lose everything since it will be unable to decrypt the files. Is this a realistic issue, I dunno since don't use it, but its something that would be on my mind so for me its not a good option.

Is there any software out there to create encrypted virtual volumes ala PGPDisk or Knox? Anyone know any others?

I just use encrypted disk images for the important stuff. You can make a blank encrypted dmg via Disk Utility. I always keep a copy of it on a usb key drive.

I store my important files the same way, but that wouldn't prevent someone who stole my MacBook from using my eBay account, since I use cookies (of course).
