Hey All,

I intend to purchase a Black Macbook in the next week or so. I was going to order it through Apple with 2GB of RAM, but saw a few posts about people buying RAM off Newegg and installing it themselves (which appears to be a lot cheaper than having Apple do it).

I'm a bit curious of a few things; Is this a safe procedure? I'm usually quite good with the mechanics and technical aspects of things, but having never owned a Mac, will I have a difficult time installing the RAM myself? Also, if I order a stock Black Macbook, it comes with 512MB RAM. If I wanted to upgrade this to 2GB, would I need to order two 1GB sticks and completely replace the existing RAM? And finally, can anyone recommend exactly which RAM to purcahse if I were to do this via Newegg? I don't want to make any mistakes, but i want this baby to be running as great as can be!

Thanks in advance! I intend to do a lot of video editing on the Macbook (which makes me think that I may want to look at the lowest model MacBook Pro, though would the above questions differ if I were to get a Macbook Pro rather than a Macbok?), so I'm conflicted on whether or not to get a Pro or just a regular Macbook. Again, thank SO much in advance!

replacing the ram on a macbook is very simple. the only tricky part is getting a small enough screwdriver (precision phillips head #00) and pushing the ram in. it takes some pushing to get it in place.

yes, you should replace both the ram sticks and ditch your old ram. i can't even give away my old ram sticks lol.

most people like getting the more "big name" ram sticks, like crucial. but i've had really good luck with corsair value ram, which i got from newegg for dirt cheap.

Thank you for the reply. I've done a few searches and came up with a lot of great information (this is a great board), i"m just a bit swamped because of the talk of SO many different memory types, and so many different problems associated with this that I figured I'd try to ask to find one answer. Thanks again for the reply, though!
