is this how it should be? I re-installed OS X to trim down the disk usage, and I thought I'd damage something if I pushed the CD any harder. I thought it was meant to be a smooth slide in until it's grabbed by the machine inside and pulled in?!?

Also when ejecting less than an inch of CD iss oushed out....

Mine is silky smooth. Yours sounds defective.

You are pushing it in straight right?

Aye, mine if I push it in till it detects the CD it will try and take it in, then try to eject and so on for a few trys then just stop. I have to push it all the way in for it to work.

Well mine has been very good with that, this will be the 3rd macbook, and they also swaped a MBP for me all pretty much without question, I'm very happy with there service and if they swap again tonight I might just have to write an email in to Apple about there service, sure it won't make any differance but still might be nice.

Yeah, after having a number of PowerBooks and iBooks I'm planning on only using my SD when I'm away from home since pretty much every slot loading drive I've ever had has had some sort of problem, usually along the lines you're both describing. This time around I'm trying to reduce usage by having an external DL burner (ND-3550A in a USB2 enclosure) to use while at home.

That said, Apple should replace it. Not sure what it takes to manufacture a reliable slot loading drive for a notebook, but MATSHITA doesn't seem to have mastered it.

For reference it should only cost like $60 - $80 to get a decent burner in an external enclosure set up for home burning operations :-)

Well just got back from the Apple Store, they swaped my Macbook for a new one, but as usual I always check out my machine before I leave the area and low and behold there was a scratch right on the trackpad, fresh out of the box (It also had a very pink screen). So I headed back to the store and they swaped again! This one is right on, no scratches, CD is perfect, screen isn't pink and runs very cool (cooler then the one I switched paste on). I love Apple service, so much that I'll write a letter to corporate thanking those that helped me even though I'm sure it won't make a differance, just to express my opinion.

Thanks Apple!

You swapped the one you reapplied thermal paste to? LOL right on

Apple seems to have no issues swapping out MBs lately. They must be selling a ton of them.

After 3 calls and 50 minutes on the phone I was eventually granted the privillage of talking to Apple After-Sales...

After 10 minutes on hold the guy picked up the phone: "Hello, this is Mark from Apple After Sales, I'm afraid we cannot replace your unit as there is nothing wrong with it."

If there's nothing wrong why would I be asking for a replacement???????

Anyway, as soon as I said the words "Stiff slot loading..." he said oh yes of course we'll give you a replacement, kind of made me feel bad for being frustrated....

I just don't know why they Pre-After-Sales were so reluctant to put me through, and after all that time told the After-Sales guy my unit was fine........(insert curse here)

At least it's done now, and the last guy I spoke to was very helpful...

That's why I always go to the store, seems I have no problem there and have very good service, if you live in the chicago region I highly recommend the Oakbrook store for service, they are very patient and understanding. Even if it's an hour drive, I still feel it's worth it to head to a store.
