Hi All,

I just got a 120gb Seagate Sata drive. I went to install it. It was very straight forward. I even screwed the Apple pull tab on the new drive. I slid it into the slot, closed the computer and went to reinstall the OS and I get to the "select destination" screen and there is no hard drive showing up there.

Any ideas what I need to do to get the drive to show?

Thanks.

Did you try using the Disk Utility on the OS X install disk?

how do you get to the disk utility? When I insert the disk and hit c or opt it only gives me the option to install the OS.

thanks

i am now running a hardware test. I got there by holding down d upon loading up.

it is testing memory. the profile has no description of a hard dirve.

the test just said no trouble found.

Disk utility is in the installer menu at the top, you'll need to format the drive to HFS as it's most likely formatted to Fat32.

Are you sure it's in there snuggly? Take it out again, inspect both ends of the connectors, and slide it in firmly but without excessive force.

hi guys, it is in snuggly. i have taken it out and put it back in quite a few times.

i can't get to disk utility. on apples site it says to hold down c and then go past the language selection menu and that on the next screen utility should be an option.

this is not the case for my computer. i get a menu that then has an introduction. i can only go forward from here. then a license screen. once again, i can only go forward from here. then I get to select destination and there is no hard drive to choose and I can only go back from here.

thanks

Go past the license screen until you get to the place where you should select the disk for installation. There should be a "Utilities" menu. Click that and select "Disk Utility."

Do SATA drives have the Master/Slave/Cable Select nonsense of ATA drives?

No. They work more like SCSI drives than ATA drives, so they are either this drive or the other one, not "master" or "slave."

I had this issue, and went to a Genius. They said it was installed right, but couldn't get it recognized.

Interestingly, the stock 80 GB drive had the master/slave/cable select pins, but the new Hitachi 100 GB 7200 didn't. He thought that would be the cause of the trouble.

I tried Disk Utility, but it couldn't see the drive. What EXACTLY does one need to do in Disk Utility to get this thing recognized?

I'm guessing because the disk is either not formatted at all or formatted with a FS that Mac OS X doesn't understand out of the box. If you go to DU, you can initialize the HDD and format it with a FS that makes sense for OS X (like HFS+ w/ journaling).

the question is, does the drive show up in DU, or do you have to do something to get it to show up?

If it doesn't show up in disk utility it's a bad drive, bad installation, or something else got messed up.

Then it must have been a bad disk. I just wasn't sure if you have to do Mount Disk or something to get it to show up.
