Am I missing something? I'm on my 1.83 GHz MacBook, with 50 GB available hard drive currently, and 1 GB of memory. I am on wireless Internet but still, downloads and uploads from/to the Internet are just as fast (or slower) than on my older, less faster laptop. What determines speeds of downloads/uploads on a computer, because I thought mine was pretty up-to-date?

Downloads and uploads have to do with the bandwidth of your internet connection, not the speed of your computer. So yes, you're right, it's EXACTLY as fast as it is on your other computer, because you're utilizing the EXACT same bandwidth.

Is there a way to compare the bandwidth of all of the Internet connections I am picking up on right now?

Networking questions, including those such as this one, go in the Networking forum.

Most computers today are ten or more times faster than necessary for basic surfing; it's ALL about the connection and the hardware between you and the Internet.
