I cant reset my macbook pro. I forgot my password and my tiger install dvd wont work. I went out to the mac store and bought the new tiger osx 10.4.6 and it still wont work. Can anybody help? The CD wont boot at all. I tried clicking on the install from the folder, nothing... Ive restarted the comp while holding down C it does nothing. Ive changed the startup disk preferences and a folder with a question mark freezes on the screen when it reboots. I dont understand whats going on. somebody help!!! thanks

The retail version of tiger isn't for Intel machines, so it won't work. The tiger install DVD that came with the machine should work.

Forgive me for being suspicious, but someone who had stolen a machine that was password protected would have these exact same questions... :/

I thought the new small box 10.4.6 is universal?

Well, I'm not positive, but the last I heard they weren't selling the Intel version of Tiger, mainly because there's no point in doing so, as all Intel machines come with Tiger already.

Anyway, the original poster's story seemed suspicious because, who would just run out and buy a new copy of Tiger if their install DVD didn't work for some reason? Wouldn't your first instinct be to either call Apple or post on a board like this? You might, however, try that if you had stolen or found the machine with the password enabled and didn't realize that the retail disc wouldn't work.

You're right, the retail version of Tiger is PPC only, as yeh, there is no one who would need to buy an Intel version, as all the Intel Macs come with it, and the discs to re-install it

Nonetheless, we shouldn't be so paranoid. This "omg they must be a thief" thing is happening too often.

I notice they haven't been back. Still, let's assume that they are telling the truth. The only solution I can think of is to call Apple and see if they will send them a replacement install DVD (or possibly do some troubleshooting to see if there is another problem behind this).

If they are a thief, then they're probably out of luck, since I can't think of any way to get around the password protection without using the install DVD.

First of all this machine isn't stolen, or found. And I DID call apple and they had nothing for me. They said the same things you guys are saying about not making intel cds. My Cd was pretty scratched which is why I went out and bought another. But neither work anyways. I don't understand why I cannot get another copy of the CD that came with this computer. Maybe I'll just have to return the computer and let the manufacturer deal with it. I'm kinda new on the whole computer scene. thanks

If you are near an Apple store, I'm sure they would help you.

But, I guess you would have done that if one were nearby. I would have thought, though, that when you called Apple they would have offered to send a mailing box, especially since they have your registration information on file. Maybe you need to ask them explicitly about this. With a problem of this nature, I would expect a 2 to 5 day turn around from the time you mail it to the time it returns to your doorstep.

You *can* get another DVD from Apple. It'll cost you a few bucks, though. It's also a pain in the ass for the guy on the other end, which may be why they didn't offer it..

But you can get around it. This assumes you don't have multiple user accounts on the machine.

Boot into single user mode.

mount the hard drive in read-write mode, then remove the netinfo database. Type these lines:

mount -uw /
cd /var/db/netinfo
mv local.nidb local.nidb.old
reboot

When the machine starts up, the setup asst will run again. As long as you use the same exact 'short name', all your stuff will be where you expect it.

If the original poster is telling the truth, I'm sorry for being suspicious, but I find it hard to believe that Apple has no procedure in place to deal with this kind of situation. What did Apple say when you called, killerducci?

I am curious as to how the DVD that came with your MacBook Pro got so scratched that you can not use it?

I am also curious as why Apple would not ship you a replacement DVD?

You can't blame us if your story seems a bit "scratchy".
