I bought a Macbook, my first mac, and I'm absolutely loving it! However there are several apps that refuses to install on my Macbook. I searched the forums but couldn't find the answer (if I didn't search hard enough, sorry).

I downloaded stuffit expander the other day and double clicked where it said "double click to install" (duh), the installer showed up on the dock for half-a-second and disappeared. Nothing happened. I tried it again and the same results. I restarted the computer, tried installing again and the again, nothing happens. The same thing happens for sketchup and other applications I can't remember.

Also several apps, even apps that Apple had pre-installed, doesn't run! One such application is Activity Monitor. Shows up in my dock for half-a-second, disappears and nothing happens.

Did I do something to my computer that screwed everything up? Did I delete something on accident? I'm also on a long trip to Japan and I happend to forget the install disk back in the US. YES THAT WAS STUPID OF ME . Is there anything I can do without the install disk?

Thanks for all your help, oh and this forum rocks!!

Hmm. That doesn't sound very good. You might try creating a new user (go to the Accounts preference pane, click the lock and enter your password. Then click on the + sign underneath where your current account is.) Once you've created it, log off your main user and log onto the new one. See if these problems happen with the other account as well. Might help narrow things down. And you might want to see about having the install DVD sent to you or something...

I tried your suggestion and unfortunately it didn't work. I created a new account and tried installing stuffit and sketchup and it didn't install. Activity monitor also didn't run. ARGH!

I'll get the disk sent to me and re-install once it gets here. Probably the quickest and easiest solution. Thanks for your help Icruise
