hi all,
ever since i bought my PB 1.67 last july, i've been having all sorts of weird problems with the sleep light (but not with actual sleep), backlight, firewire etc. (both under panther and tiger), so i finally wiped it clean and sarted over. the sleep problems now seem to be gone and the firewire remains untested, but the keyboard backlight is completely gone.

earlier, it would work only immediately after a restart (in a dark room). with ambient light, hitting the F9 or F10 keys would bring up a little symbol (similar to the volume or screen brightness symbols) saying the backlight was not on, so i couldn't modify the brightness (which was logical).

now, and still under 10.4.6, the backlight never comes on at all, even in a completely dark room, there is no response to hitting the F9 and F10 keys, and perhaps strangest of all, the keyboard preferences panel doesn't offer me the "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" check box (that i think i'm suppossed to have).

is there a command line alternative to turn on the 'illuminate in low light' preference? i'd be jappy if somebody could help bring me out of the dark!

thanks in advance.

p.s. i did a search on these forums but couldn't find anything relevant.

I once had problems with my sleep light and backlight on my 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4. I finally sent it in (while it was still under warranty). When it came back Apple had replaced the motherboard and ambient light sensor circuitry. Ever since, it's been working like a charm.
