MacBook Pro woes continue with expanding batteries - Ars
Battery swollen; metal back is buckled - Apple Discussions

Not sure if this is related to the exhaustively discussed heat issues, but those with trackpad issues and random shutdowns may want to look into this.

That's scary. If the battery is expanding due to hydrogen gas buildup, then it's an explosive hazard. I had a bad experience with a Lithium battery once, so that picture is no laughing matter.

I had this problem. The battery started to swell. It was swollen so huge it wouldn't fit in the space anymore. It was nasty.

My MBP battery has now done this also. Apple has a replacement on the way.

The ironic twist is that a coworker had mentioned this issue to me yesterday morning; I told him that I hadn't had any issues with my battery, By mid afternoon, my machine had shut down without warning at 50% charge. After fully recharging the battery, it ran down to 80% charge and then the machine died again. Even at this point, the battery looked normal. When I looked at it this morning, the battery looked much like the pictures above - it happened overnight while charging. I immediately removed it from the machine and called Apple. The tech said it was a known issue and referenced an internal note on it, and issued a dispatch for a new battery.

man you'd think that after so many years of making these batteries, they'd be able to make one that doesn't buckle or explode.

wtf. would anyone here besides me trade a 30 minutes of battery life for a battery that doesn't blow up.

What's under the aluminum on the battery? What's making the aluminum bulge under it?

I believe that Sony makes the batteries for the MBP.

I'd venture a guess that it has to do with the heat.

This same thing happen to me and the genius guy just swith out the batter. He said that there were just a batch of bad batteries out there. I found it to be no big deal and took no time to replace it. Its not like a dell burting into flames.

Newer battery technologies do have their risks. And Apple is not the only one that has problems either. Dell has known issues of batteries going bad and overheating as well. It's the risk we take for storing electrons in a chemical soup and getting electricity out of it, then dumping them back in.
