It usually takes a little while for slot-loading drives to come out, so I think we may see them in September, give or take. The slot-loading versions will probably also be slower than the tray-loading drives until both max out on speed.

The new Panasonic UJ-215 should be out soon which is a slot load BluRay drive, should fit the 17" MBP fine, doubt they'll get it into the 15" MBP unless they switch back to the standard slim drive height.
At the moment it's slated for 1x BluRay, 8x DVD and 24x CD burning. (More specs in link). The full size drive does 2x BluRay burning.

Interesting that Panasonic announced their slot- and tray-loading laptop Blu-ray drives at the same time. Perhaps the typical availability lag between the 2 kinds is going away these days. Of course, if true, Apple had to go and ruin it by starting to source extra-skinny slot-loaders for most of their laptops. Oy.

The question is: when?
MBP was relased when, Feb or Mar? Doesn't Apple usually revisit a line after about 6 months?
Hmm, September would be in time for my birthday.

Merom drops in August; logical time for Apple to give the whole system an update (160GB or 200GB HDD, 4GB RAM, etc).

I'd rather have the extra 1/4" and get the Dual layer drive.

Until they come down ALOT in price (the toshiba drives are mini computers and contain a Pentium 4 CPU in them; Sony's drives are near $999 each), I'm going to be sharing an external drive for awhile.

i think you're pretty naive to think that apple is going to put blu-ray in their laptops. was apple even a part of the development of blu-ray? not to my knowledge. look at the histroy of the consortium that made the technology. also, stand alone players are being released at $1000. how much do you think a slim version is going to cost? if and when it even exists. does one even exist? is their proof they can even make one??? ntmk.
secondly, i wouldn't belive all the hype about blu-ray. a lot of people aren't all that interested in it, myself included. don't mean to rain on your parade, but today i have to make an exception.

What you're saying makes sense. If a stand alone player costs $1000 how can a slim drive be stuck economically in a laptop? However, I remember when DVD players were still around $600 I thought myself very clever when I bought a new computer with a DVD drive in it. The inclusion of the DVD drive only caused the price to be about $100 more than if I had just gone with the CD drive.
Of course, maybe I wasn't so clever. My friends and I had to watch our movies on a 19 inch computer screen for awhile which sometimes was a bit jumpy-considering I had 64mb of RAM. Memories.

i remember those days.... mine was a blue g3 350 with a dvd decoder built in... i only had a 17" screen...
i guess i'm just not all that interested in blu-ray, i see better things on the horizon than little plastic discs---no matter how much they can hold. it'll happen some day, and i'll still ignore it then. *puts head back in sand*

Granted, there don't seem to be any shipping yet, but as noted earlier in the thread, both slot- and tray-loading Blu-ray burners for laptops have been announced. And the OP was probably referring to the fact that Sony has announced a Vaio laptop with Blu-ray hardware. I think Apple will at least make a Blu-ray BTO option in the MBP line by year's end. They might stick it in the "Best" config of the 17" model, too. And I'm sure it will be pricey. Whether it's in the immediately-next revision depends on availability.

Sony has already announced a VAIO laptop with a BluRay drive (not sure if it's just a reader or also a burner); total price of the laptop is estimated at $3600, which is reasonable for a high-end MacBook Pro.
