I just installed a Seagate Momentus 100GB into my PB G4 1.33 17". Now I can to test how zippy its going to feel by installing the Tiger OS I just brought. The folks at Apple told me that I should restall the system disc (Panther) that came with my PB G4 1.33 17" and then upgrade to Tiger, in order not to lose certain applications that came with the computer. I don't care about the iLife apps, since I brought iLife 06, but I was told that there are other apps on the original system disc.
Should I install the system disc (Panther) and upgrade to Tiger to keep all the original apps that came with my computer? Or should I just do a fresh install of Tiger? I had heard that upgrade installations make a less stable OS than a complete fresh install. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thank you.

Well it depends what the 'extra' apps are. and if you need/want them or not. At a guess, the extra apps include things like Nanosaur and Appleworks, which you won't get if you just put Tiger straight onto the PB. However I have also heard that a fresh install is more stable than an upgrade, so if this is the case, you could install Panther from your original discs, and because Mac apps are contained in one file, drag the file over to an external disc or something, format the disc, install Tiger, and drag the apps back onto the PB.

I did more research into this subject and would suggest users interested in this topic to use the search words, "installing, tiger, clean."
The best thread I found dealing with the best type of install, upgrade, archive, or clean can be found at:
http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-notebooks/255671/tiger-clean-install-has-transformed-my/
But my situation is different from most users as I have a clean hard drive I am installing onto. The main program that I wanted (or at least know of) is Stuffit Expander that is on my 10.3 system install discs but not on the retail version of Tiger I brought but I just found out that Stuffit Expander is free from their website, so that is no longer an issue.
It would be nice if someone can list all the programs that are on the PB G4 1.33 install disc that are not on Tiger. So far, I know I will be losing the iLife apps, Stuffit Expander, and the ability to use OS Classic.

Why not use Pacifist to install software from 10.3 on your new installation of Tiger! It solves all the problems....
