So lately I've been burning dvd-r's with my MacBook... I create a burn folder and insert a blank dvd-r and most of the time my MacBook tells me i must insert a disc with *whatever* amount of space. In order for me to actually burn a disc I usually have to restart the computer or stick a blank disk in while simultaneously clicking "Burn" > No Disc Error > Ok > Burn... several times while the disc is still being read.

Is there a problem with my DVD Drive that warrants a trip to the Apple Store?

Try Verifying and repairing disk permissions in Disk Utility.

Based on the title of your posting you should have no problem. The MacBooks get hot enough to burn any disc by nature.
