Okay, I recently came into a Lombard (333/192MB) and I'm trying to get it working. The problem is it has no hd but i do have a few lying around. I've tried both a 6 and 4 gig in there. It will tell me size, brand, etc, but each time I go to initialize it tells me it failed. I simply can't create a volume to install stuff on. I even tried a 750meg HD I just pulled from a running/booting powerbook 1400. any ideas?

Do you (or a friend) have a retail OS 9 install disk lying around? I'm curious if that'll work--you'll need either a retail install disk or a PB install disk, since they were computer specific.
I don't know if you can install Tiger on a 6 GB disk, not enough disk space?
But that doesn't explain why you can't initialize it...
Do you have a portable 2.5" firewire case to initialize the drive in? They're about $35 and I like the Macally because it has an on/off switch--PS: it accepts only 9.5 mm high HDs, and I imagine your 6 GB and 4 GB drives are 12.5 mm high.

Actually the 6 and 4 gigs were both made for this. I've got a copy of Jaguar I'm probably going to put on it. I WAS using a retail copy of 9.2.1 to try and initialize it. I'd start up from the CD. I was even able to completely write zeros to it, but at the very end the initialization failed. I tried Disk Utility under the OS X installation. I'd tell it to partition and such, and it would go through the motions, but at the end no new volume would appear under the drive in the list.
I don't have a 2.5 firewire drive, but I'm thinking about getting a 2.5 adaptor for the 3.5 enclosure that I do have. Any other ideas?

Will a straight formatting work with your retail 9.21, without zeroing and without partitioning? If so, then your copy of Jaguar should install.
The Lombard is supported by Apple up to 10.3, and you can use xpostfacto for Tiger (OS 9 has to be installed to use xpostfacto.) Here's a quote from the website that might apply:
"Once you have Mac OS X installed, it is possible to use the Mac OS X Disk Utility to format disks. However, those disks do not appear to be bootable on older machines, even if you check the "Install Mac OS 9 Drivers" checkbox. So it seems best to use the Mac OS 9.x version of Drive Setup to format drives instead."

What exactly do you mean by straight formatting? There are currently no volumes, so I have to create at least one partition. Could it possibly be the cable from the motherboard to the hard drive? I'm hoping it's as easy as that

Under OS 9, using the Drive Setup utility, you'd "initialize" the drive.
Under OS X, using Disk Utility, you'd "erase" the drive, having selected the extended, journaled option.
In both cases, you'd have one volume (parition.) IMO the 6 and 4 GB drives are too small to partition.

Okay, I tried that, and got the initialization failed message. Under the list of drives, I see "Mac OS 9.2.1" (CD) and "<not initialized>" (hard drive).
I can get a new cable on eBay for less than $15, think it's worth a shot?

The Lombard doesn't have FireWire, in case that was where you were headed!

I think he was leaning towards initializing the drive seperately and see if it mountes. I've got some 1400s lying around I can try one in, we'll see what happens.
