I think I am experiencing the same issue as all2ofme (see http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-notebooks/299204/1-5ghz-powerbook-problem-disk-temperature/)

I tried to run disk utility to test my drive and I got this message:

Disk Utility stopped verifying “PowerBounce!” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit

However, I cannot select Repair Disk (it's not highlighted). Is this because it is my startup disk? If so, is there a way I can repair this volume? Here is the stuff I have available:

OS X 10.4 DVD (not the DVD that came w/my powerbook, this was purchased last year, so it's 10.4.0 if you will)

The 2 DVD's that came with my Powerbook (Software Install and Restore disks 1 and 2)

I was unable to use the 10.4 DVD (it tries to reinstall, and I don't want to erase my drive, I just want to run disk utility).

Finally, I have a WD one touch backup drive (last backup about a month ago, I do monthly backups).

So, any advice how to proceed. There is also an Apple Store about 5 miles from me (in the event that the advice is I need to bring it to an Apple store).

Thank you,

O
B unce!

Start up with the disc that came with your PB and open Disk Utility from the menu when it comes up. You should then be able to repair your start up disk. Or, put another way - if you can't repair it from there then you need to try something other than Disk Utility

I've read good things about Disk Warrior if it comes to it. Also, if your disk works fine after an Erase and Install then you might be fine without swapping the whole disk out. AFAIK if you zero the drive when you format it (Options in Disk Utility if memory serves me correctly) then it'll mark out any bad sectors.

Hope all goes well!

Have you checked the SMART status of the HD? In Disk Utility, highlight the HD and click the Info button at the top--what's it say about SMART?

Next, learn how to do fsck on the HD. Restart the Mac, immediately holding down the command(apple) and S keys until you see scrolling white text on black background. When the scrolling stops, you'll see the prompt where you type in:

fsck -fy
(return)

This works if your HD is journalled, you just do fsck -y if you're not journalling. No need to type the sbin stuff, it works just as well this way.

Keep re-running this until the result says "OK" at which point you type:

reboot
(return)

report back on your results. If the HD doesn't report back OK, then backup up everything asap, because you're on thin ice in a hot summer.
