So I am finding out all of the little intricacies of my new MBP. I noticed that almost the instant that I close the lid, the sleep light on the button comes on. Does this mean the HD has already stopped spinning? Because I remember on my ibook, I had a momentary wait before the light came on after the lid was closed. So I just feel a little uneasy moving the MBP as soon as the lid is closed. I just want to know if the MBP really goes to sleep that fast and if its safe for me to move it.

It's safe to move a laptop with a running hard drive as long as you don't bump or jerk it around.

However, the sleep light comes on in a dim fashion whenever the MBP's screen is powered off -- this includes when you close the lid. It sleeps only when the light pulsates, though.

Steady = screen off
Pulsating = sleeping

If you didn't change the settings, it should take a little longer for the MBP to fall into sleep. It is because of "Safe Sleep". See details here: http://n00.be/archives/300

wow it does take 20 to 30 seconds now for the pulse to start. Where does one find the safe sleep file that is mentioned in the article?? I would like to see how big mine is.

It's exactly as big as how much RAM you have.

If sleeping is taking a long time, maybe it's because you have a lot of wired/active memory allocated. Break out Activity Monitor and let us know the Wired and Active memory counts.

wired is 135mb and active 137 mb when I just put it to sleep. It took about 6 seconds. I guess earlier when I tested it, i didn't realize how much stuff I had going on ..
