just curious if anyone can help me with this. i seem to get a lot of conflicting statements concerning whether or not u can use 512mb of ram successfully with OS 10 on the powerbook g3 lombard? also, the physical stick size and slot specificity seem to another sticking point.
is it just something that is trial and error or should i stick with 384mb?
if anyone can shed any light on this, it would be appreciated

I think it would depend on how much the lombard can take rather than limitations of OS X. OS X can use multiple gigabytes of RAM in G5s.

I have 384MB in my Lombard. It used to have 512 in it but whenever I try to multitask, it freezes. So there's really no point in putting 512 in.

Are you sure you didn't have faulty RAM?

Some Lombards had a problem with the CPU/RAM daughtercard that made them freeze up when using larger amounts of RAM with OS X. Some of them didn't, though, so if you have the extra RAM around, it may be worth trying. I remember reading about The Freeze at MacFixIt and maybe MacinTouch; I'm sure google will turn up further details.
Actually, I think you can even get Lombards up to 768 MB, using 512 in the upper slot and 256 in the lower, since chip density increased a bit after Lombards came out but before 144-pin PC66 SO-DIMMs became obsolete. I might be wrong, though, since MacTracker says 512. But I know the different slots had different maximum physical dimensions for DIMMs, so it would make sense if one could fit a higher-capacity stick than the other.

Pretty sure, I had brand new crucial RAM from their site. I'll try my friend's RAM from his Pismo to test if my RAM is faulty later.

Or, if you have OS 9 on that computer, see if booting into it makes the freezes disappear. If that's the case, you've probably got the daughtercard issue, and your options are 1) less RAM + OS X, 2) more RAM + OS 9, or 3) try and find a replacement daughtercard on eBay or something (note that I have no idea if there's any way of telling beforehand whether another one will have the same problem).
