Some strange things have been happening to my Macbook pro, here is a list of them(I already tried a restart):

1. Spotlight won't work
-No matter what I search, no results turn up
2. Search bar wont work
-Same thing as spotlight, nothing turns up
3.iPhoto is freaking out
-Some photos are replaced by a dotted square, however as I'm scrolling up/down the photos appear
4. System Preferences(Desktop)
-Just like in iphoto, there are some photos that show up and other ares that appear blank. However, when I click these areas, system prefs force quits!

Please Help

ps. What is the exact folder that iphoto reads to add pictures to the library??

Go to utilities > disk utility, and repair permissions on your hard disk

It looks at the receipts files left behind by some installers and sets the file permissions for the relevant files according to the receipts.

I selected macintosh HD then clicked verify disk permissions, and then repair disk permissions.

I am running 10.4.7(a recently installed update form software update, could this possibly be the reason...??) Anyone with 10.4.7 experiencing similar problems?

sometimes problems like this are remedied by downloading the very large combo updater and re-applying the update. It's worth a try.

Also, establish a second admin account, with no 3rd party updates or hacks. Do the problems persist when logged into the plain vanilla account? If so, then you're looking at having to wipe the HD and reinstall everything (after backing up, which you should have already done, given the problems...)

No I do not have additional RAM. 2GB RAM

And yes, after I created a new account, both the spotlight and the search bar problems have been fixed. I cannot confirm, however, if the iphoto problems have been solved seeing that I have no pictures in that account!

Since things seem to work OK in the 2nd plain vanilla admin account (you could import photos but my guess is that they work) that means that something is installed in the original user account that is causing the mess.

Any unusual 3rd party hacks? System modifications? You could try disabling all your login items, and seeing if that helps (after a restart or after logging out/in.) Did you use a utility like Onyx to disable/modify anything?

HAHAHA!! MY computer did one of those force restarts (where that grey, transperant strip comes down gradually and tells me it needs to be shut off) And guess what?! When I turned it on, both the search bar and spotlight problems were fixed! However, the iPhoto problem still persists. This could be becuase I renently changed the names and locations of some picture folders...(Pictures>iPhoto Library>Originals) Is this possible??
