That little empty port on the left side of my PB 17" - I'm pretty sure I can install a CF card reader in there, no? Where can you find one of those, and any instructions on how to install??
Thanks!

It's called a PC Card or PCMCIA Card... either one. They sell them all over the place, and online. I've got one that I no longer use (because I upgraded from my PB to a MBP which uses Express Cards instead of PCMCIA) if you're interested. I'd sell it for $12 shipped. Or your can check ebay, newegg.com, etc. Apple Store's sell MacAlly branded ones I think.

Actually the "PCMCIA" term has been out of vogue for a while-except for people who insist their Macs aren't "personal computers." But anyway, ANY computer with a PC card slot should handle a PC card-CF adapter. Note that the CF card interface is a subset of the PC card interface, so all the adapter really does is connect the right pins.

Yep! That's what they are and what they do-adapt CF to PC card. Sorry...
The upside is that these things cost about $10 if you look hard for 'em, so you're not up a creek, just up a small pond.

I'll pick up where I left off....
So, the one I got ahold of is a joke, it's soooo slow, it makes the Slowskie's look fast.
I mean impractical slow.
Is there a high-speed version available for the 17" PB I wonder?

well, it's nice to have those PC card devices but I've been burned before.
I used to have a PowerBook G3 Lombard. You could swap out the optical drive for another bay module like a hard drive, battery, or ZIP drive.
I made a mistake of buying a ZIP drive for my PowerBook once. I couldn't use it with anything else except another PowerBook.
So I bought an external USB ZIP drive so that I could move it to any machine with ease.
I also had a compactflash PC card once. Later I bought a USB multi-card reader. It's small enough to slip into my laptop bag and I can use it with any computer I wanted.
I'm buying everything in either USB or FireWire now.

Well, PCMCI cards used to be pretty standard - very few laptops didn't have them. Of course, these days Apple is going the other way, and we'll all need to replace them for express.
