I have a G3 PB, not sure of the name but it's a bronze keyboard, with SCSI rather than Firewire, and a 400MHz G3. I have installed Panther on this, and it runs surprisingly well, even with only 192MB of RAM. However, Safari and software update now won't work because some part of webkit is missing somehow, and I figured I'd just do an OS re-install, as the disk had no data to speak of on it.
However, it will NOT boot from a CD. It has the 2X DVD drive, and it reads CDs / DVDs quite happily when it's booted, but it will NOT boot. I have tried the Panther Install DIsc 1 Upgrade Disc, and an 8.6 iMac restore disc I had lying around. I also tried an Ubuntu 5.10 Live CD, which should have no issues like Apple deciding that the particular CD shouldn't run on the particular hardware, but that didn't work either.
To attempt to boot from CD, I have held down the C key, I have run the installer from the CD while booted, I have manually selected the CD as boot device, and I have done boot cd from OpenBoot - all fail, and fail over to booting from the hdd. If I dosconnect the hdd, I just get the blinking folder / ? icon.
I have zapped the PRAM AND done reset-nvram and reset-all from OpenBoot, all to no avail. Is there anything else I can try?
