I'm posting this for a friend who's having some powerbook issues. Here is his post from another forum...

so my 17" powerbook got dented on the bottom side in the top right corner of the comp.

now when i turn it on, the screen is REALLY dim, like, you have to put your face an inch away from the screen to even make out shapes.

i called the apple store near me [which is still 2 hours away] and they are backed up on repairs for another 2 weeks. they did give me the number to a COMPusa near them that works on macs, but i quoted 900 dollars from them. i'm almost positive that something inside the comp just came unplugged, i doubt the actual backlight got messed up.

but anyway, compusa can look at it any time but they charge 150 bucks just to look at it. if the backlight itself is ****ed up, it'll be between 6-700 for that, plus they said since the metal piece is dented they'll have to replace that which would be between 50 - 150 dollars.

anyone have this happen before? can give me advice?
should i just drop the 150 and pray that it's unplugged and not burnt out or something?

Last hope is to try resetting the PMU and PRAM, but I doubt this will help. Internal connectors don't typically get "unplugged" from drops, so I seriously doubt it's something simple as that if the backlight worked fine before. Chances are there is something now wrong with the backlight inverter, fuses, or the bulbs in the panel itself. This repair is going to cost more than $150, pretty much no way around that.
