i have an ibook than in previous post had been diagnosed with bad hard drive. I am going to take the ibook to bestbuy and get a 80 gb harddrive installed. But I want to install the os myself, because it it too expensive to restore the os through the geek squad($130). What are the steps to follow after i receive my ibook with a new hard drive installed to install an os. I have os 9 and os 10.2.8 jaguar I think.

Thanks

Joyous Jorge

I installed tiger from de CD just by holding C during startup. Then the OS instalation asked to format HD (hfps) and installed OS. I found it very simple with Tiger, i believe that it's the same with jaguar. And the good thing is that you choose what to install.

I am going to install Tiger. Does it matter whether the tiger cd or dvd came with an Imac (mine) not from an Ibook?

thanks

Install gentoo linux a few times and you'll find installing OS X incredibly easy...

I tried installing it several times, and not once did I get it right. Everytime it was missing a driver somewhere.

I installed OS X on a PowerBook G4 that I replaced the hard drive and it was simple, all I did was push the C key to boot from the OS X cd and then it went through the steps. You should have absolutely no problems with it.

Try your Tiger install disk. Hold down the C key during startup. Cross your fingers and it will let you install it even though it's from an iMac.

hey, I have a quick question that sort of goes along with this thread... if you ever decided to upgrade your MB's hard drive but only had one Mac (the said MB) what would you do to get everything onto the new hard drive? have 'em do it on a Power Mac at the Apple store?

You could buy an enclosure for your HDD, and use it externally hooked via USB or Firewire. Then you can clone the HDD with the OS on it, onto the new drive, and you'll be all set.

O.o... if I already owned an external HD could I make a disk image of the disk I was using and then put it on the firewire drive?

Yup. You can use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!

Or just use the Restore function of Apple's Disk Utility, which is conveniently installed on every Mac OS X Panther and Tiger installer disc, letting you do the backup while the disk is not in use (=good).
