I have a recent black Macbook, used daily but carefully and carried in a shock-protected sling. This morning, I noticed that the case is splitting about 2mm from the front of the laptop, right under the point where my right wrist rests. The split is about 2 inches long and gentle pressure on the palmrest at this point causes the split to be very obvious. The crack is not along a seam in the case, but in the plastic of the palm rest itself, parallel to the edge of the case.

I'm off to the Apple store to try and replace it. Watch out!

Quite - but my attempts to photograph a tiny crack in a BlackBook with a cellphone were less than instructive!

I'm just back from the Apple Store, where the staff were very helpful once I'd persuaded them that I had a manufacturing defect on my hands. Manager went into huddle with Tech, new BlackBook appeared within 3 minutes. Much apologising and thanking was done by all concerned.

The old Blackbook (2 months old) had a palmrest surface that came right to the edge of the machine. The new one (6 weeks old) has a significant seam about 2mm from the front of the laptop, right where my crack occurred. It also seems slightly heavier, the off-axis viewing angle of the screen is poorer (bad contrast) but the RAM is MUCH easier to install. Still as hot as Hades, however

I have also noticed a split in my macbook case. It appears to be where the two grooves on the top of the lid press against the place where my wrists normally sit. My macbook is just a year old and I am going to the Apple store today to show it tot hem and ask what they can do for me !

I think it was kinda silly for the Apple Store Bar to replace the whole machine for what easily needed to been replaced was the upper keyboard assembly. With parts in stock --30 min fix, tops. If it wasn't abuse (which yours didn't sound like it), then its just a simple claim.

The stores are too quick to replace rather than repair. Most of it's because not all stores have portable certified techs.
