Hi,

I have a rev B 12 inch PB. I have had 2 HD failures in the last 2 years requiring applecare replacement. Now, my s.m.a.r.t. indicator is indicating another impending failure.

I am backing up my HD with carbon copy cloner,
But do you think I have reasonable grounds to request a new machine as a "lemon"

Thanks,
spk

No. A failing hard disk is in no way indicative that anything is wrong with the rest of the machine. More likely, it's a bad run of hard disks, of which Apple keeps spares to do replacements. Apple doesn't take long to replace hard disks, even if you ship the unit away. Just do that, or have someone else replace the disk (e.g. with a newer, bigger, faster one).

hi, i don't want to hijack the thread, but my boss who has his life on a 12"pb is having similar problems. A year ago his hd failed and the machine was sent away for data recovery and a fix.
The machine has been running ok (except for a sticky dash key) in tiger for the past year until thursday last week when a screen saver crashed. A forced restart has only resulted in a blue screen (after the rotating logo) and the occaisional beep! Never heard a mac sound like a casio before.

I have known him to not have any space left on his drive, which he recently managed to fix by deleting lots of music. I've not been able to target mount the drive or start up from the install disk or the hardware check disk. Once powered up the hd makes a rythmical graunching noise that is interspersed with quiet ticks and clicks. The power supply plug into the side of the mac looks damaged and i've felt static on the case.

Any ideas as to how we might recover anything that might be left on the drive?

Thanks in advance.
