hi there:

so i bought a secondhand iBook G3/600 via eBay from a leasing company

did my research (or thought i did)

(i assumed it was the M8599LL/C one in the middle - the one with the DVD-ROM)

turns out the damn thing won’t read DVDs (so i can’t install tiger directly with my current DVD disc)

system profiler confirms only CD-ROM on the iBook version=1.2

now, assuming i’m an idiot, i’m gunna try:

inserting tiger DVD install disc into G4 iMac, connecting the two via firewire and clean installing to the iBook

question - can this be done? does it involve target disc stuff and how? ect ... ect ...

any expert advice welcome

am going ahead anyway, but

have the rest of the day to do this so will keep checking on replies

i'm no expert but i'm sure expert advice is forthcoming. yes it can be done and does involve firewire disc mode. do a search.

Or, try getting an external DVD-Rom? That way you can use it in the future for movies, etc. and they are not that much.

The only possible problem that I see is the USB only becoming available when the OS loads...

all solved:

probs booting iMac G4 to tiger DVD with jaguar iBook in target mode & tiger only wireless mouse. neither mouse cooperated with jaguar (on iBook) but 28 hours and a coupla six packs later and all is (almost) well.

do have ext.HD which is gunna be bootable and have installation pkg's of everything
