Help! Using flat screen

	I have a 21" viewsonic attached to my macbook. I love the larger screen for photo editing. Anyway, I have been able to put the macbook to sleep, close the lid, plug in a USB cord and about 10% of the time, the flat screen will come on, but the mac screen will stay dark. This is my prefered viewing mode. However, the other 90% of the time it doesn't work. Any suggestions about what I can do to make the mac screen stay asleep. I have adjusted the hard drive sleep mode, waited long periods of time, etc... thanks in advance.
