Why wouldn't Apple include a control panel setting to customize the fan controls? For example, maybe I don't care if the fans come on at a lower speed and run more often. I know Apple was probably going for longer battery life but they could have given more flexibility to the user.

This is a pointless post... they don't offer it and thats that. Besides, its something Apple would never do... too complicated for the novice, bog standard user/switcher... just another setting to make a mac less like a mac.

How would this be too complicated? By default it could be configured as it is now, so if you didn't want to change it you wouldn't have to.

The simple (and unsatisfactory) answer is, because it's not Apple's style.
Nevertheless, I'd like to see them offer a little utility on their website. Make it a widget for all I care. That way people who want can increase their fan RPMs and get cooler cases and people who rather have quiet machines or don't care at all can just ignore it.

Here is a mock-up someone had posted on flickr:

I don't think something like that would be too complicated and fits in well with the existing preferences already available. I know I would like to see this as I would rather the laptop make a little more noise in exchange for being cooler.

How can fan control be too complicated. Heck Pc laptops have had utilities like this for a while. Its too bad that it not offered.

OK , maybe complicated was not quite the right word.... but it wouldn't be Apple like - its not elegant.. Apple wouldn't want to admit to their computers being so hot that they have to have a slider to choose from hot and quiet or cold and loud - the press/media would be all over it: "Apple laptops either scorching and quiet or cool(er) and loud" -not going to happen

Ok, I could see how that might be like Apple admitting that their design was too hot. That makes more sense than being too complicated. But didn't they already take some "heat" (sorry bad pun) for that when they released the updated firmware for the MacBook Pro?
