Hi all,
My sister just gave me her old 400mhz G4 Titanium Powerbook. However, she had this thing so screwed up, all it will do is boot up. EVERYTHING takes an eternity, if it launches at all. I've been trying to run disk utility to repair permissions, but it just won't work. Disk Utility opens, but when I choose the drive, I get the spinning beach ball of death, EVERY time. Is there a way to run this from terminal? Since I have NO idea how to use terminal, any help would have to be for complete dummies, meaning me.
Also, the combo drive doesn't work, otherwise I'd just do a clean install. Maybe I should see if it'll hook up to the cable modem and download some utilities? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Tom

How much empty HD space does it have? Could be that the HD is so full that everything takes forever.
Meantime, since there's nothing of yours on the PB-400, why don't you just wipe it clean and reinstall? If there's still plenty of HD space, just do an archive-and-install.
On my previous PB-400, I had to open it up several times to press the ribbon strip from the combo drive back into its socket, which resurrected the disk drive. While you've got it open, you could also just replace the HD...since the PB-400 originally came only with a 10 GB HD (unless your sister upgraded?)

Do you have another, more recent Mac? Try booting up the newer Mac in FireWire Target Disk mode, with it connected to the Titanium PowerBook. If you put a Tiger install disc in the newer Mac while it's in FW mode, the PowerBook should be able to boot off of the disk and do the install. However, only newer macs have the ability to share the DVD drive in such a way; not all machines that support FW Target Mode will.
Alternatively, you can start the Titanium PowerBook in FW Target mode, and from another Mac, run the Tiger installer and select the Titanium PB's HD. (You don't need to boot off of the Tiger disc to do this; just launch the installer package.)
