I have a Powerbook G4 500Hz. Yesterday, it freeze. I tried to repair the disk from my old ipod where I have the DIsk Repair and Disc Genius. The Disk Arepair utility said the disk have errors but it could not repair them. The Disc Genius does not find problems when it doues de HD scan. The computer turns on some times when I run it from the internal HD but suddenly it freezes again.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!!!

Please provide more details about what version system software you're running, how full your hard drive is (how much empty HD space.)

Your hard drive may be going bad, so you should make sure that you have backed up all your data.

I am kind of new to Mac. What do you mean by "going bad"? Should I buy a new one? Can I do something to save this HD (it's an upgrade not older than 1 year, not the original that came with this Mac

What are the errors reported by Disk Utility?

When you say it "freezes," what exactly happens? Does it completely lock up, where everything on the screen stops moving and you can't move the cursor at all? Does the cursor still move, but everything is just nonresponsive? Are you getting kernel panics (the "You need to restart your computer" box)? Be more specific.

In System Profiler, under Hardware->ATA, what does it say for "S.M.A.R.T. status"?

Yes everything on the screen stops moving, even the cursor. I do not receive a message to restart the computer. Some times ( I tried many times) I turn it off in the back button with a pencil tip and when I turn it on again, the whie Apple screen starts, but then it goes off suddenly. When I used the Disk Utility it said the disk have some errors but at the end, they could not be repaired. I will run it again from my external HD to let you know exactly what the Disk REpair says. Also I will check what does SMART status says. Now... SMART status says veified. When I tried to REpair Disk, it says error because the disk could not be mounted? Does this sound right?
I am now running the Verify disk function and it says:
Incorrect number of threads records
Then it said: The Volume G4 needs to be repaired
1 HFS volume detected
Volume needs Repair

And then a little window appeared that says: First Aid Failed.
Disk Utility sttopped verifying "G4" because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit.

I am trying now the Drive Genius. It reports an error: Unable to unmount when I try to verify the disk integrity. What does unable to unmount means? How can I fix this?

I changed the title of this thread to reflect what it's about. It sounds like there's a data problem with your drive, one that something beyond Disk Utility will be required to fix.
