I took my iBook to work on a 90+ degree day, and it appears to have killed it.
It´s an ibook 600 dual usb that I purchased at the end of 2001, running OSX3.9. It worked just fine for years, but the other day it mysteriously froze up. Now, when I start it up normally, it will freeze after one minute of being on. If I then try various special start ups - safe boot, open firmware, using disk warrior - the harddrive seems to run but the screen remains black.
anyway, just got back from a repair place. they could boot it up in target disc mode. So they said it is almost
certainly the logic board, or possibly a cable. either way, several hundred dollars
to fix it, apparently. said it probably died in the heat. aaaarrggghhh! so it
basically sounds like i´m left with a lot of junk. what should i do? any other
options here? i´ve had this computer since the end of 2001, but it seems a shame to
junk it because of one bad part. so any help, any options at all? and if not, then what kind of notebook to buy? a refurbed ibook or a new Macbook. I basically only need it for word processing and internet, so a refurb actually seems a good option. but not if its going to di!
e in three years. I don´t buy Apple´s line about that being the natural life of a
computer, it´s just silly. not to mention the hundreds of $$$ i´ve shelled out for
extra batteries, power cords, etc. so, what´s the deal? what do i do. looking
forward to your sage advice, macheads.
also, by the way, why, if its a hardware problem, i don´t really understand why booting it normally comes up with a working screen, but the other methods leave the screen empty.
