I have a linksys router which was origionally configured to be silent with WPA secirty.

My MacBook often had problems connecting to it, so I eventually made it so it would broadcast the SSID...

At any rate, now what I'm getting is after some time, my MacBook seems to completely drop it's connection. I can then go & re-select the wireless access point, and it re-connects immedatly after doing so. But I've already had to do it 3 times this evening, so I'm a little concerned.

My old iBook has had zero issues with this access point since I origionally bought it...

Now I'm aware that there are some wireless issues with the intel based systems. But I haven't read anything about the connection dropping at random (mostly about problem re-joying after the computer going to sleep).

I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything specifically relating to this issue. Is this consistant with anybody else's experience???

There's a lot of posts over on the Apple Discussions about this problem http://discussions.apple.com/thread....&tstart=15. I have it also and have temporarily hooked up an Ethernet cable until a resolution is found.

Thread belongs in the networking forum, where you'd clearly get more suggestions. You'll want to post more details, such as what WAP brand because some brands seem more prone than others.

Meantime, broadcasting the SSID is not a break in security since stumbler software can see it anyway. Download iStumbler or MacStumbler and see how crowded your wireless neighborhood is. Chances are that it's very crowded and that you should switch to another unused channel. Also, if you or your neighbors have installed new 2.4 ghz cordless phones, there's your interference right there. Using a microwave? All sorts of reasons for disconnects...

Hi,

I had the same problem, I discovered it happens on my MacBook only when I'm connected to a 802.11b network. With a g connection its' absolutely fine. I don't know if this is the case with your MacBook, but what i gathered from the Apple Discussion forums also seemed to point towards my problem only.

I've run into similar problems with particular routers with both a Macbook and Macbook Pro. The problems were resolved by updating to 10.4.7.
I've found that the cheap Belkin F5D7230-4 worked very well with these computers.

This is how my MacBook airport problems go, too. All about the wireless B networks. All others work perfectly.

I have the same problem using a g connection on an AirPort Express with a MacBook. The evidence points towards a software problem.

Hmm....sometimes - even when I am 2-ft from my connection (cable) the drops occur.
