...during a recent storm, when I accidently left the phone line plugged in.
Apparently I can't use an external USB modem for it as I'm using Panther and the guy at the Apple Store told me I'll need to buy & install Tiger to use the USB modem. Does anyone know another way around this, short of installing a whole new operating system? Or does anyone have an idea where I can buy a new internal modem?
(somewhere in Australia preferably).
Also, the last time I could change my dvd region code I changed it to region 1, as the dvd I wanted to watch was region 1'd. Stupid, yeah, considering every other dvd I own is region 4. Anyway, does anyone know a way I can change it to either region-free or back to region 4 for good?

Depending on which model iBook you have, the modem is either built-in to the logic board or it's an internal USB modem that can be replaced. If it's the internal USB type, it should be fairly easy to replace it. I don't know where you were asking questions the first time, but it might be worthwhile to find out which kind of modem your iBook uses.
Since the region code is burned into the firmware of the optical drive itself, short of flashing the firmware there's no way to change it. Unfortunately, it's possible to flash the drive to region-free settings, but not after the last manual region change. Your drive is stuck unless you can get it factory serviced. There may be some ways around the region lock, depending on which optical drive you have. You may be be able to use VLC Media Player to play your DVDs. It may ignore the region setting.

okay thanks - its an iBook G4, late 2004 model (i bought it new in april 2005) & its a built-in modem so basically i'd have to track down a compatible modem and have it installed by an apple professional, or either buy an external modem ?
and thanks for the tip on the dvd player - i know vlc is region free so at the very least if i can't get dvd changed back i can just use that.

Actually, because of regulations, the internal modem is never built into the motherboard. It is always a removable "card." So if just the modem is fried, it's relatively easy to replace.
