My 700Mhz iBook suddenly refused to wake up from sleep. I have tried force quit, restart, force shut down, re-starting, and finally I reset the PMU. For most of the rescue protocol I encounter only a black screen. On two occasions, I was able to restart the iBook and do work. When I close the lid, I get the pulsing white light. Then, the next time I open the lid and start use the keyboard or the trackpad, the screen begins to get artifacts and lines. If i tap the case sometimes the lines go away and sometimes the iBook goes black and will respond to nothing. When this happens, if I shut the lid, I do not get the pulsing light. Touching the case and wiggling the batterery cover both have caused the screen problems. I have re-installed the battery, re-seated the ram, and Airport card, to no avail. As of today, I cannot get the iBook to respond.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions? A repair with significant costs probably is out of the question due to the age of the unit. Other than this issue, the iBook has run for over four years with no problems. Your suggestions are invited.

This sounds like the famous iBook G3 logic board problem. Officially, the extended repair program ended a year ago, but if u sweet talk someone at Apple they may do it for free as I have seen reports of that on these boards.

Thanks Sean-

I checked some threads on the macfixit forums and, as you suggest, the logic board failures discussed precisely match the symtoms of my iBook. I'm going to take your advice and give AppleCare a call. A side note: I just noticed that the time left on Applecare on my TiBook is 14 days. May be a bomb waiting to happen the way my luck has been going, but it has been great Mac and has given me three years of joy.
