Please excuse this newb post:
I ordered a Mac Book a week and a half ago, and ive had it for a couple of days, however the fan has not turned on once, despite attaining some pretty toasty temps.
I think that the fan and or temp sensor might be disconnected (additional evidence: i stat widget recognises no temp sensor or fan)
i want to test my MB to find out for sure if the problem is real or just in my head, but i dont want to test it by running alot of programs and revving the cpu because if there is a cooling problem, the heat might cause a serious problem on the mother board. what should i do, is there some app/easter egg to turn on the fan?

First of all, you may want to post this in the MacBook forum [this is the MacBook Pro forum].
My MacBook Pro fan rarely if ever comes on [I have only heard it a few times]. I can't speak for the MB but its fan preferences may be configured in a similar fashion.

Moving to MacBook forum.
And I have NEVER heard the fan on our 800MHz G4 iBook, even though I've seen evidence that it is running (moving paper behind the computer, etc.).

hey man i am with you on this. i just bought a black macbook yesterday and this thing is is like a chunk of asphault in the hot sun. just sitting idle doing nothing the bottom is burning up, i heard the fan come on 1 time. i am really dissapointed with the amount of heat, even the hand rests are warm. i cannot rest it comfortably on my legs because its just too hot. i like it alot but i may be taking this baby back to compusa.

Get yoursel the Core Duo Temp iStat has not been updated so that it can recognize the temp sensor of the MB.
If your fan is working you should here is engage when the temps are in the high 70s (celsius). Mine start amping up once the temps get into the 80s.
If you want to run an easy test type yes | /dev/null in a terminal window. Actually two terminal windows since there's two cpus. You can find the terminal application in Applications->Utilities.
If the fans don't come on and the temps are reaching 90c then you may indeed have a defective unit and your best bet is to call apple

Actually....the new IStat seems to work. However, the temp it shows is a couple degrees lower than Core Duo Temp.
