There is an application called "System Profiler" in /Applications/Utilities/ that will tell you about your hardware. I think your iBook is a G3 at 300MHz. And yes, it will be slow with 10.1.x. You will see an improvement with 10.4.x, but you must first upgrade the RAM to the maximum (160MB?) or I wouldn't even bother. That iBook works best with Mac OS 9, but what's the fun in that?

288MB is the max, actually, but that's still far too little to run OS X acceptably, never mind well. Combined with the slow CPU, and it's a recipe for frustration.

That said, IE for Mac is also a really slow browser. Using something else would be a lot faster.

I think there is still a version of Camino that runs on 10.1. That should be faster than IE.

About running 10.4, you need a DVD drive to install it - does it have one? 10.3 should be ok to install. Basically every release of OS X has got faster.

Don't the orange iBooks still go for about $150 on eBay?

Consider selling it, and picking up a refurb MacBook for $950 (full warranty). Might be worth it.

$800 will get you a much, much, much faster, better computer than the $250+ you'll end up paying for RAM, HD, and OS upgrades.

Gotta love Ebay. Using OS X with 128MB RAM isn't going to be a whole lot of fun, but sure, if you can get Panther or Tiger on the cheap, definitely go for it. It will be faster and be able to run modern browsers like Camino.

On something that old, I'd still vote for OS 9 to get the best performance, but if you absolutely need/want OS X, go ahead and get Panther. Tiger is too much of a RAM hog, even after killing Dashboard. Oh, and max out your RAM, assuming it isn't already maxxed.

EDIT: According to everymac.com, there is no 333 iBook. The original (blue or orange) was 300, and the SE (graphite) was 366. The 300 model came with 32 MB of built-in memory, the 366 had 64, and you can add up to 256 MB to either. Definitely do that if you are planning on running any version of OS X.
