I'm thinking about buying the 2nd battery for my MBP, however for me the 2nd battery would make sense if there was an external, dedicated battery charger, so the 2nd batter would charge while I was using MBP of the 1st battery. Then, when the 1st battery got discharged I could just swap the batteries and continue working without MBP being connected to power adapter at all. Quick search on the net didn't return any results. Have any of you heard about something like that.

Also, is it possible to swap batteries in MBP while it's asleep?

Yes. Once you wake it up again, it will take a few seconds to load back RAM contents from disk but then it'll be back right where you left it.

Simon, is there any special way to put MBP to sleep in order to swap batteries, as when I did that MBP sleeping LED went off when I took out the battery, then put the battery back in turned MBP on and it booted up as if it was turned off.

Hmm. It's normal for the LED to turn off and to get a boot chime afterwards, but it should not reboot, it should get you back to where you were before you went to sleep. Make sure not to press and hold the power button. That would be a hard reset. You just want to press it shortly.

Thanks chabig, this is the device I was looking for, but unfortunately it is designed for all G3/G4 PowerBooks and iBooks, they didn't mention its compatibility with MBP batteries. Are PowerBook and MBP batteries the same?

Simon, thanks for the hint about pressing the power button, I'll try that again.

Is there any external battery charger for a MacBook or a MacBook Pro? Seems like a huge oversight to not have one of these things. No way I could purchase a new laptop without one of these.

Every now and again I search the web for a charger, but so far it appears that nobody makes them for MB or MBP unfortunately. The only thing I found was the slightly higher capacity batteries from FastMac (FastMac Store - Battery, Rechargeable: MacBook Pro 15, but no chargers.

For anyone interested, NewerTech started selling battery chargers for MB and MBP , at last!!! They also advertise higher capacity batteries for those laptops coming fall 2007.
