I have a powerbook g4 which has never had serious problems. I recently replaced it with a Mac mini and haven't used it very much in 6 months or so. Today I was trying to use it and it cashed about 4 times in 4 hours. I tried formatting the drive and re-installing the operating system - my intention was to give the computer away, and i figured this would be a good way to see if it's a software problem. I only got half-way through the install because it keeps freezing.

I can think of two possible explanations for the problem:
1. i spilled a drop of water in it about a year ago. It was behaving very oddly so i shut it down for 24 hours. The water dried and the computer worked fine for about 6 months until i replaced it.
2. I have problems with mildew in my apartment.

Basically I don't know what the crashing is a symptom of. I've also noticed a loud, intermittent clicking sound that must be from the hard drive... this is also a new problem and it might be related.

It could be all manner of things, but the clicking sound from the hard disk doesn't sound good. FWIW I just replaced my hard disk and it's fixed my problems.

Run the Hardware Test CD that you got with it and go from there. Good luck - hope it's nothing serious.
